Kiki Smith's Ribs are made of terra-cotta and strung together to form a rib cage, they are held up and suspended from the wall. The pink rib bones, disconnected from the sternum, are suppose to represent repaired breaks, implying evidence of trauma. They provide a metaphor for the frailty of human life. I really like this piece because it amazes me how strong the rib cage actually is in order to provide protection for such vital organs including the heart and the lungs.
