Kiki Smith

I chose this piece called "Born" by Kiki Smith because after reading into it more I was inspired by Smith and her ideas. This bronze sculpture was made for no other reason than because it popped into her head. She said many people relate it to mythological stories or relate it to nature and how without the work of the deer (or the animals or nature itself) the humans would no longer exist. The best thing she said in reaction to peoples ideas on what she meant by this piece was "I try to be as vague as possible! I want things to be open. I don't want to tell people how to think." I think "Born" is about the importance of nature for humans but then again, as Smith would say, it could be anything.
