This is a marble sculpture by Bernini. It derives from the mythical creature of Medusa, a snake-haired woman who could turn people into stone just by her gaze. I think it's funny that this is made out of stone. It's a contradiction to Medusa's ability...a stone version of a woman who could turn people into stone!
