Spiral Jetty
I'm covering the Spiral Jetty by Robert Smithson created in 1970. While not your average sculpture this piece uses the lay of the great salt lake in Utah and the connection of the land to create a wonderful display that can be viewed from space. It is a combination of rock, salt crystals, the water and the earth creating a perfect spiral that is 1500 feet in length. Robert Smithson was an American artist being raised in New Jersey and going to Art Students League of New York located in Manhattan right in our neighborhood. He created this piece and 3 years later died in a plane crash at the age of 35. It is easy to say even thought he is gone he has made an impact on the surface of the earth very that wont be easily forgotten.
